General Questions

How much do your group classes cost?

Our currently active group class "Acting for Adults" runs for four terms (pertaining to the public school term dates). Each term costs $550. When enrolments are being accepted for a new year, pre-paying for the year costs $1750.

Do you have any classes for children or teenagers (under 18s) specifically?
Currently we do not, however please chat with us today and see if your under 18 might be suitable for our Monday night class. Our Monday night has a mix of age groups, and we encourage our class members to learn to work with acting partners of different age groups as they would in the industry.

Your website mentions an adult acting class. So why would it take under 18s?
You're absolutely right. Our class contains a mix of ages, and while the majority of its members are adults, we do accept some under 18s. This comes down to many factors and depends on the young person. Our goal is to maintain a classroom where everyone no matter what age, is respectful and enthusiastic to work and learn with each other. If someone matches our core values of respect and passion for the craft, we'd love to hear from you, no matter the age.

I'm interested but not sure NAS is right for me. Can I do a trial class?
You sure can. Please contact Bobby to see if this is suitable for you.

I've been looking at other acting schools in Canberra. What makes you different from them?
Our mode of teaching is based around building the individual not just as an actor, but as a person. We don't just teach you "how to act". We also guide and encourage you to learn who you are on screen and how to make your personality shine when you are required to introduce yourself in auditions. Each individual learns at a different pace, and while we strongly emphasize the importance of applying your skillset in any genre, our tutoring targets the individual strengths of each student. We don't offer time sensitive courses, so you are not pressured into absorbing too much information too quickly. And when you're ready to search for an agent, we are here with you to help you prepare.

I've never acted before. Do you take brand new students?
We sure do! Please follow our auditions page for information on how to send us your self tape. Everyone starts somewhere, and we're proud to welcome people with no prior film acting training or experience. Please keep in mind however that our spots are limited, and we hope you don't give up on your dream if we haven't a spot for you at the time of audition.

How does NAS get you ready for film projects?
While we prioritise the training and field experience of our student body, we are also the proud partners with a number of dual actor/filmmakers. These members of our family can help you connect not just with local filmmakers, but can also be found filming for us. We regularly film in class, introducing students to set etiquette, supporting our students through the adrenaline inducing nerves that comes with acting in front of large camera equipment. By having these dual trained filmmaker actors within easy contact to our students, we are able to provide our class with a unique insight to the world of filmmakers, what is expected of actors, and how to work with them as teammates and future collaborators. We strongly believe that acting training is more than just hopping in and out of projects til you you're on the red carpet. Our mode of teaching targets the partnership between filmmaker and actor, in fostering respectful relationships between the two.

I'm super anxious. Would this class be a safe place for me to develop my social skills?
Absolutely. Acting with us is about tapping into truthful emotions, which in turn influences an individual's understanding of social communication both in the context of acting, and in their everyday lives. We've seen former students struggle immensely to introduce themselves to a class go on to become successful fulltime acting professionals. We have a zero tolerance of classmates treating each other disrespectfully, and endeavour to maintain a classroom where each student feels safe and supported.

I've trained in syllabuses such as Stanislavski and Meisner technique. What do you teach?
At NAS, we are all about introducing acting to our students in a personal and individual manner based upon raw emotion, and how to utilise this discipline safely. As our class is a mix of those brand new to acting, intermediate, advanced, and pre-professional, it is important to us that we establish a learning pace that suits each student. Some syllabuses do not suit some students, and we encourage them to seek such training with other specialists. At its core, our acting training is based on building confidence through the use of emotional truth.

What's your specialty in acting training?
We specialise in acting for film. While we do encourage our students to pursue careers and experiences in the acting industry as a whole, our training is tailored for film acting for screen. However, many of our former and present students are more than happy to share their experiences in professional theatre (see our testimonials on our home page).

Do you offer any other additional classes to prepare me for screen?
We strongly encourage all of our students to audition and take part in local projects with other students and amateur filmmakers to further practice and strengthen their skillset. We do not currently offer any specialty classes specifically focussed on the voice of the filmmaker. Our in-class shooting includes a simplified introduction to camera and on-set etiquette, including the use of place markers, continuous lighting, microphone awareness, and acting to a digital cine camera. Our goal is to prepare you for your journey as a screen actor by starting with a smaller representation of a film set in a controlled environment.

I sent you a question a while back. Why haven't I heard back?
We do apologise. We frequently see a high amount of enquiries and endeavour to answer your questions as soon as we can.

I did some drama at high-school. Can I still audition?
Of course you can! Acting for film is a related but different specialist branch of acting, but just because you haven't tried it before, does not mean you can't. In fact, we welcome students from every performing arts background, be it having never tried anything of the kind before, to people who have grown up in the performing arts.

If I didn't get into your school, is there anywhere else in Canberra I can learn acting?
If we sadly don't have room for you, please chat with Bobby and see what other options there are for you.

Why should I choose NAS when there are other local schools I can pick from?
We strongly believe that different students match with different mentors. Which is why we encourage you to find the best teacher not just at their craft, but for you. Think of it this way, what type of training are you looking for? Are you after a school that is more focussed on putting you in shows every week, or are you after teachers who are more focussed on getting you ready for the industry? We are all very lucky to have such a variety of teachers available in this craft, and we support all actors finding the right fit for them.

Additional Enquiries

Can I send a casting call to your school for my project?
Certainly. We encourage our students to audition for every opportunity as suitable. We are happy to forward on such experiences to our students, from filmmaking students, to professional opportunities.

Do you have anyone who could help me with self tapes or showreels?
We can absolutely put you in contact with people who can advise you how to shoot a self tape, or have the equipment to shoot showreel scenes for you. We do not have our own studio for hire if you're after a personal booking for these enquiries, however we can recommend some studio spaces to get you started.

I have some highschool students interested in the performing arts. Would you be interested in talking with them or offering classes for career prospects?
We do apologise, we are very busy and currently cannot open a new class. We highly encourage these students to research what acting schools might be suitable for them, and of course we are excited to receive their audition applications to learn with us.

I'm already well trained and want an agent. Can you help me?
We wish you every luck in your journey to professional acting. We do not offer agent advice outside of our student body, as we have not seen your talent, and do not know best who to refer you to.
